Having fun is so much easier when the day doesn't demand it. Ridiculous, stupid holiday expectations. If you're reading this, chances are you're not one of those people who has been preparing for New Year's Eve for so long that you passed out a couple days ago. Which makes for a much better chance that you are one of those people who may want to attend First Night Tacoma, a family friendly, alcohol-free event that consumes Tacoma's Theater District and Antique Row.

New this year is a scavenger hunt with a night at the Hotel Murano up for grabs for those who find 13 locations. To ring in the New Year, the First Night folks will burn an effigy of a dragon (last year's Chinese astrological symbol) and reveal a snake (next year's ill-fated symbol), and TV weatherman Rich Marriott will provide commentary.

Of course, the scavenger hunt and weather guy are only a beginning. A First Night Tacoma button will allow you access to five indoor stages and three outdoor stages, fire performers, burning man artists, the Magic Lantern Society, the world's shortest parade and fire pits in the street where people could warm up.

So if you're just glad 2012 is over, stay at home and join Carson Daly and/or a propped-up Dick Clark in Times Square as they watch the ball drop. If you're excited to get started with 2013, head to downtown Tacoma, where the snake, and spirits, will be up.

FIRST NIGHT TACOMA, SUNDAY, DEC. 30, 6:30 P.M. TO MIDNIGHT, $10 BEFORE DEC. 31, $14 AFTER, NINTH AND BROADWAY, DOWNTOWN TACOMA, DETAILS AT FIRSTNIGHTTACOMA.ORG
